Procrastination – the thief of joy but the prince of excuses

September 30, 2022

Are you planning to be spontaneous tomorrow? Is everything on your to-do list today what was on your to-do list yesterday? Do you joke “I’m very lastminute.com” as a little something secretly dies inside you as you miss the boat again. The lonely island of procrastination often offers no lifeline.

You feel you are the only one suffering in stasis, stuck in psychic superglue and turning in on yourself with merciless self-recrimination.

And there’s the rub. It’s the conversation we are having with the task list that is the key to the lock-in.

Which one is your brake slammer?

  • I might fail
  • I don’t know what I am doing
  • I will look foolish if I get this wrong
  • It will take ages and may not amount to anything
  • There are no guarantees of success
  • It’s OK for other people
  • I need to read more self-help books/watch more Ted Talk until I find the answer
  • I need to (over) think this through more
  • I’m not good enough

To which, as your coach, I would say – FGS please be more original!

In the Darkroom of Your Worry Negatives Develop

Often we catastrophise outcomes even though we may be wrong and 99% of the horrors we imagine don’t come to pass we scare ourselves into no-action submission. We can internalise our limp limbo state and feel useless and less that we really are.

There are millions of books out there which will share countless action plans to get you into motion from how to eat a frog to habit stacking. Can you be bothered to read them? Is it that you feel deep down they don’t apply to you?

Here I share a few unconventional coaching tools which may help you unfurl your wings. lean in and fly to the destiny you deserve.

  • What would change if you showed yourself some compassion and love when facing this task? What would someone who practiced kind, self-belief do?
  • What if you invested in the best possible outcome happening? Run that film as you start the task. See you winning and enjoying a positive outcome.
  • Stop having a conversation with your fear. It’s persuasive and wants to keep you small and safe. Say to the negative dialogue – thanks for the warning. I am fine. I will be OK. Because you will be.
  • Progress beats perfectionism.
  • Overthinking marinades doubt.
  • Ask yourself – if the worst case scenario happens will I cope, will I survive, will I be OK? And if the answer is yes, take the next step.
  • Stop worrying about what other people think. No one cares they’re all wrapped up worrying what people like you think.
  • Do the tough stuff first and then reward yourself
  • Think of all the hurdles you have overcome in your life. You did it then you can do it again.

You are not alone. If you wish to finally get out of traction and into action book a discovery call with me.
