Active Listening Skills
Everyone’s Talking, No one’s Listening – The radical art of not interrupting
Are you a good listener or just someone, quick on the jaw? In a world that appears to be on permanent broadcast, being an active listener is a rebellious act of love. Developing strong active listening skills isn’t just good communication – it’s one of the simplest ways to make others feel genuinely heard.
As a coach I am a paid-for listener. Yes, it’s that simple and that profound. We are starved of being heard, understood, “got”. If that doesn’t sound exciting or it’s an “anyone can do that” grift I, hand on the heart, for the good of mankind, urge you today, now and often to occasionally try the deeply selfless act of zipping it.
Listening Between the Lines
As coaches we hone in with sincere laser focus on what someone is saying, how they are saying it, the cadence of their words, the energy, the sighs. What might be going on between the lines, what is not being said?
The cognitive dissonance of hearing someone saying that they’re “fine” but picking up the whiff of high functioning mayhem or polished surface pandemonium.
You can feel it in conversations that skim but never land, where two people speak but neither feels seen. You can feel it in the slight surprise – almost relief – when someone actually uses active listening skills. It’s rare enough now to feel like a gift.
Our Ears Never Get Us in Trouble
Perhaps we’ve mistaken communication for connection. We assume that if words are exchanged, something meaningful has occurred. But connection lives in the space between those words – in the pauses, the tone, the things said and unsaid that only a careful listener will catch.
To listen well is to step off the stage gracefully and generously.
Not the polite nodding, not the “mm-hm” soundtrack to our own internal monologue – but real active listening skills. The kind where you set down your agenda, silence your inner commentator, and tune in with almost unreasonable attention.
The kind that says, without words, you matter enough for me to be fully here.
Try it yourself. Drop the urge to jump in, share your opinion or fill every silence. Instead, give someone the space to speak and put your active listening skills to the test.
And here’s the quiet surprise: when you do this, conversations deepen in ways you couldn’t have scripted. People reveal more than you expected. You notice subtleties you’d have otherwise missed. You learn – not just facts, but perspectives. You discover how someone else builds their world.
You might even learn something about yourself.
Why Active Listening Skills Matter
Because listening isn’t passive; it’s participatory. It asks you to widen, to hold another viewpoint without immediately measuring it against your own. It develops patience, empathy, and curiosity – the muscles we rarely exercise in a rush to be heard.
And perhaps most importantly, it offers something profoundly human: the feeling of being witnessed.
The Gift of Being Truly Heard
Not evaluated. Not corrected. Not outperformed. Just… heard. Conversation should not be a competition.
What might happen if more of us stepped off broadcast mode and into this kind of presence? Fewer misunderstandings, certainly. Less conversational one-upmanship. More trust. More pauses that feel like respect rather than awkwardness.
And maybe – just maybe – a small easing of that quiet hunger we all carry: to be known, if only for a moment, exactly as we are.
So next time you’re in conversation, try a simple experiment.
Say less. Listen more.
And notice what unfolds when you give someone your full attention – no distractions, no rehearsals, no rush to respond.
You might be surprised.
Because in a world full of voices, the rarest sound is still this: someone who is truly, deeply using their active listening skills.
